Finally, we recommend that the corpus be used as a benchmark for the language that air traffic controllers and pilots use when they have abnormal situations, which could be further investigated for its potential application in aviation.


The content covered in the corpus is normally taken from the American Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) website. However, the FAA focuses on what should be and not what actually is. This lack of a theoretical foundation may lead to misinterpretations as the content is not geared towards the best way to communicate in an abnormal situation. As a result, it is not well-suited for research purposes. The content which served as a benchmark for the creation of the corpus was selected based on the number of occurrences, the lexical diversity and the linguistic features.


In order to highlight the extent of the corpus, we made use of statistical tools available in the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). This was conducted as a means of providing a complete overview of the amounts of data that were found to be especially relevant for the research project. We also used Google Ngram Viewer to provide a baseline for the corpus, as well as for the corpus as a whole. The results provide further insights into aviation communication, showing the extent of the scale, as well as the lexical diversity and the usage of different phrases. By highlighting these aspects, this paper provides a better understanding of the corpus and helps to make an informed decision as to its inclusion in the corpus.
