Sony Ericsson W8 Review: A Walkman Phone with Android Flair

The Sony Ericsson W8 is not just another Android phone. It is a Walkman phone that combines the music prowess of the iconic brand with the versatility of the Google platform. But is it enough to stand out in the crowded market of budget smartphones Let's find out in this review.

Design and Build Quality

The Sony Ericsson W8 looks very similar to the Xperia X8, except for the Walkman logo and the color options. It has a compact and lightweight body that fits comfortably in the hand. The front is dominated by the 3-inch capacitive touchscreen with a resolution of 320 x 480 pixels. The screen is bright and sharp, but it lacks multi-touch support and scratch resistance.

Below the screen are three physical buttons for menu, home, and back. Above the screen are the earpiece, the proximity sensor, and a tiny status LED. On the right side of the phone are the volume rocker and the camera key. On the left side is the microUSB port that also serves as a charging port. On the top are the power button and the 3.5 mm audio jack. On the bottom is the microphone pinhole. The back of the phone houses the 3.2 MP camera lens and the loudspeaker grill.

The back cover is made of glossy plastic that attracts fingerprints and smudges easily. It can be removed to access the battery, the SIM card slot, and the microSD card slot. The phone comes with a 2 GB microSD card pre-installed, but it can be expanded up to 16 GB.

User Interface and Performance

The Sony Ericsson W8 runs on Android 2.1 Eclair with a custom Sony Ericsson UI on top. The UI features four customizable corners that can hold up to four shortcuts each. You can also add widgets and shortcuts to the three homescreen panels that you can swipe left or right.

The UI also includes Timescape, a social networking app that aggregates your Facebook, Twitter, SMS, and call updates in a 3D timeline. You can also access PlayNow, an online music store that offers songs, ringtones, wallpapers, and games for download.

The phone is powered by a 600 MHz processor and 168 MB of RAM, which are not very impressive by today's standards. The phone can handle basic tasks like browsing, messaging, and music playback smoothly, but it struggles with more demanding apps and games. The phone also has limited storage for installing third-party apps, as only 128 MB of internal memory is available for that purpose.
