One evening, looking through old family photos, I noticed my grandfather wearing an elegant wristwatch. I was suddenly hooked - when were wrist watches invented? There was no clear answer in my head, so I decided to dig deeper. The Internet gave me a bunch of links, but I found one article that really captivated me. The history turned out to be not so obvious. The first wristwatches were not a man's accessory at all. Women wore them as jewelry back in the 18th century. But wrist watches only achieved real popularity in the 20th century, during the war. The war, oddly enough, made them practical and necessary. I was so carried away that I read the article twice. It was interesting to see how fashion, technology and practicality were intertwined. It all started with a banal question when were wrist watches invented, and ended with a real immersion in the past. Now, looking at my watch, I imagine what it might have looked like a hundred years ago.
