Use Automator To Combine Text Files Into Excel
Some things don't translate too well, though, especially since I'm not sure how it deals with python's open('filename','w') command. It probably doesn't have permissions to create new files, or I'm entering the command incorrectly. I had the idea to instead output the processed file as text, capture it with Automator, and then save it to a new file.

I currently have a plain-text file in a Dropbox folder. The file is set to be filled with text (and only text). I am trying to create an Automator workflow (or an Applescript script) that will read the contents from the text file, and write the contents to the clipboard. This way, I can copy text on my iOS devices, paste them into the plain-text file in Dropbox, and then use my mac (and this script), to paste the text to the mac. Basically, using Dropbox to sync clipboards between OS X and iOS.
to achieve what you're after. You may also want to skip "Get specified Finder items" and instead make your Automator workflow a Folder Action, which will pass files into your workflow as they are added to a folder you specify.
Do you often combine multiple PDFs into one file? Normally, you'd need an app or online tool to do that. But you can create a service using Automator that allows you to easily combine multiple PDF files into one.
The PowerShell Get-Content cmdlet is an indispensable tool when you need to use text files as input for your script. Perhaps your PowerShell script needs to read a computer list to monitor or import an email template to send to your users. PowerShell Get-Content easily supports these scenarios!
How about following a log file in real-time? Yes, the PowerShell Get-Content can do that, too!. Continue reading this article, and you will learn how to use the Get-Content cmdlet to read text files in PowerShell.
Until now, you have been working exclusively with text files, but Get-Content can read data from the alternate data stream (ADS) of a file. Feel free to read more about streams, but you can think of a stream as another data attribute stored alongside the typical file contents.
Automator is designed to create workflows for automating multiple tasks, it is capable of managing workflows from different applications and documents, including PDF. You can utilize Automator to compress, extract text or combine PDF. However, you cannot convert PDF to Excel directly with Automator, only to extract data from PDF to Excel.
Pdftoexcelconverter is exclusively designed to convert both native and scanned PDFs into Excel. You can upload PDF files from Mac, Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive. And it processes the conversion quite fast.
If you've got huge PDFs you want to convert to text documents, there's a really good chance you'll want those new files to be as searchable as your PDF was. This is especially critical for wordy PDF files, as text documents lack formatting. Instead of visual cues to tell you where to look, you'll have a wall of text.
Keep a few things in mind when using Nitro PDF Pro to turn PDF documents into text files. It retains some formatting, which can be handy in certain cases. While there are times you will definitely want to strip out all of the formatting a PDF has, sometimes objects are actually necessary bits of info.
You can use Preview to save text files as PDFs, but not PDF to txt. Instead, Apple's built-in Automator is your go-to solution. Just keep in mind Automator is a 'pro' tool, so follow along closely so you don't mess anything up:
First, you're using a cloud-based service, and there's no way to know what's happening behind the scenes. While we don't doubt most are simply converting PDFs to text as a service, we do wonder why they offer it free of charge. It may be to train a machine learning algorithm using what amounts to crowdsourced data, or they could be saving copies of your PDFs or text files for some purpose.
Thanks Brooks for an excellent tutorial and a great Applescript-Automator Service. I was in a real bind trying to burst a number of PDF documents to put their contents into another document as captioned figures. Splitting the documents by hand was not only tiresome, but also prone to error. So your solution was just what I needed and when I needed it. Most appreciated. Really well done!
However, it turns out that this automator action creates Images (as its name suggests) and any previously searchable text in the PDF document is converted in the process. This makes their further processing very difficult. Hazel, for example, cannot read the content of the split pages but could do so for the original, combined PDF document.
What you can do is merge the PDFs after exporting. You can do this with Automator -to-combine-pdf-files-in-mac-osx-using-automator-to-make-a-service/, or you can just open them in PDF and drag the thumbnails to move the pages between documents.
Thank you for posting this. I split 4 different PDF file that each had 10 pages using the automator. Saved the automator into the same folder as my PDF and dragged each one onto the Automator file. Simply amazing. Just another example of why I will never go back to a Windows machine. Bought my first MacBook Pro in June and it constantly amazes me with what it can do.
Hello I have a wordpress site that I need to import 334 pages into. The pages I have are in individual .cs files. I could mass convert these to .txt files if needed. But is there a way/plugin that would allow me to upload and create the post from the content automatically? To do this manually is going to take me a while.I have only set a small price for this question, however if you think that you could do this job for me, please PM me and suggest a price. I don't even mind if someone wants to do this manually as it needs to be done.ThanksEDIT:: I have managed to do this the following way:1. Convert all .cs files to .txt using Automator on Mac.2. Create .zip file out of files.3. Use this plugin to upload .txt files as posts (wordpress.org/extend/plugins/zipposter/)This worked very well and very quick.I will be splitting the prize fund between everyone who answered as I tried all your answers, but in the end used my own way.Thank You
I guess your next problem is to avoid importing each file individually by hand.I assume you have 334 individual csv files in a directory (fx. /csvdir/)You will need to combine the 334 csv files into one master csv file , so you can use plugins suggested above.1) if you are using linux/unix it is very easy:# cd /csvdir/# cat *.csv > master.csv2) if you are using Windows you can go into the command line and typefor %f in (*.csv) do type "%f" >> master.csv see fx: -to-combine-multiple-text-files-into.htmlThen you can open the "master.csv" file in Excel and reorder the columns so it matches the requirements of the importing plugin.
To add files from your computer, drag any files or folders into the left pane (Layout view), or files list pane (Details view). You can also drag file or folder onto a folder to add it to your portfolio.
To edit the description of a component file, right-click the filename and choose Edit Value > Description. Enter the description text and click OK. The updated description is displayed under the Description column of the files list pane.
With OS X, you can use Automator to automate several functions. This nifty little how-to by macmost shows you how to sort files into sub-folders using Automator. You can use Automator to alter what happens when a file is added to a folder. In this example, new files added to a folder are then sorted into subfolders according to their type. You can add multiple actions to a folder and then determine which order they are used.
