SAO has many time skips, and the narrative jumps from one point to another, thus making it a difficult watch for fun. However, I have arranged the anime by its release and chronological orders just so that you can watch it without getting confused or without skipping anything.
You should first watch Sword Art Online according to its release order if you do not want to pause the series mid season to switch to another installment. The chronological order, however, is good for keeping a track of the timeline.
Based on the popular light novels by Reki Kawahara, Sword Art Online is one of the best-known anime of the past decade. The fantasy sci-fi series has captured the imaginations of viewers with its adventures through different game worlds that often blur the lines between virtual reality and real life. SAO Alternative is a separate series, with a different cast of characters. It can be viewed as a standalone story, although a couple of references to Sinon and Kirito might be missed if you haven't watched the "Phantom Bullet" Arc first.

The series has grown to be one of the most popular anime franchises today but at the same time has been one of the most divisive anime within the community. For many Netflix subscribers, their first experience watching anime may have been Sword Art Online.
Unfortunately, the show never addresses this issue, instead slamming viewers with filler and dragging itself out as long as possible. At times, it may prove to be unwatchable. Also, the plot may have lost its tension and provides no incentive for the audience to be interested in what is going on.
Even more, the film is not a spinoff but instead focuses on character development. Most importantly, it focuses on how Rath got started, leading to the laicization storyline, arguably one of the greatest in the series. Consequently, this is a watch that I strongly suggest.
This film is just great. If you want to follow the proper timeline of the SAO trip, you should watch the first SAO and SAO II before watching this film. This is coming from a die-hard SAO fan, so take my word for it!
Sword Art Online depicts different arcs over its several seasons, and while the arcs are, for the most part, standalone in their narrative, they do follow a lot of the same characters, and seeing their evolution would require you to watch the whole series in the right order. That is why, as far as we are concerned, it is advisable to watch the Sword Art Online works in the proper chronological order.
The best way to watch Sword Art Online is to follow the release order of each entry. The only thing that might confuse you is the last two movies. They return to the first season and reveal new events and information about it.
All of the Sword Art Online movies are canon and should be watched. Even though the Sword Art Online Progressive movies take you back to the first season, it covers a lot of new stuff that fills in gaps in the show.
